Covid 19 Corona Virus

PostAuthor: Cusstout 1100 » Fri Mar 13, 2020 11:04 am

Don't know how folks in the U.S. and the rest of the world are "coping" with this threat, aside from the Donald (sort of) closing the borders; but the wife and I were out shopping yesterday, and all the shelves for toilet paper were empty - even in Walmart. People stocking up because of Covid 19, so I'm told. And here I thought it was a respiratory infection??? Anyway, I'm thinking I should stock up on various strengths of disinfectant: Rum, Beer, Wine. Just in case!

Good move. Disinfect internally :bg:

It has affected my family in nearly the worse way. My wife’s dad passed away yesterday, we cannot afford the risk of traveling to Thailand at this time.

Fortunately the temple has the ability to store ( for lack of a better word ) his body for up to 3 years. After things get better we’ll be able to travel back for the cremation funereal ceremony.

BTW, it was not due to Covid19.

Here in Ireland, things are getting kind of crazy as well.

The schools have been closed until the 29th of March & all public events are suggested to be cancelled. Which is a strange one for a lot of the Irish to handle as this is St. Patrick's Day weekend!!
We've 3 'compromised immune system' cases here in the house. Myself, my 9 yr old son (Asthma) & my 4 yr old son(Non Verbal Autistic). So I'm quite happy that they are off school & at home with my wife & I.

I've also been planning a charity motorbike ride since mid January to raise Autism Awareness in the local area & funds for a national Autism Advocacy organisation. That is looking like it won't be happening either now, so I'm gonna have 90 t shirts & 40 hoodies that I'd planned to sell on the day, here at home until this all blows over.

So I suppose we all just gotta take it 1 day at a time & see what happens.

what FDR said in 1933 still holds true ... "nothing to fear but fear itself"...

what I don't get is why the run (no pun intended) :ops: hoarding on toilet paper (and bottled water)? diarrhea isn't one of the symptoms

Maybe the fear of being quarantined at home and running out ?

Admittedly, we bought toilet paper and paper towels last week at BJs. They had a special if you bought $100 worth of certain products, you’d get a $25 gift card.

In all fairness, we were low on both and we also stocked up on Swiffer stuff too to make $100. Last week they had plenty, yesterday a few towels, same with Walmart.

Maybe I can sell the tp on Ebay for $50 per roll :id: :bg:

Sorry to hear about your Father in-laws passing, Jake. As for the toilet paper fetish, it hasn't dawned on me "Why?" yet! Beer, I can understand.

Sorry about your father

Same insanity in Utah, people are panic buying potatoes, pasta, TP and other "staples"
Guess Mr. Chick Little is right "the sky is falling the sky is falling!"

I've asked several people why the TP thing and haven't heard any reason yet.
As for the water thing, at my job one of the things I am a certified operator and responsible for 8 campground water systems.
Any public water system is required to test their system every month to insure it meets State and EPA standards, bottled water doesn't.
I have talked to some of the chemists that do the testing and they've told me that a lot of "bottled" water won't pass those standards.

Meanwhile, if I stay home from work and just work on my bike, can I call it social distancing?

I live next to US 30, the only time the highway has been this quiet is during a snow storm. Very little traffic .

Ahh well, I mentioned in opening this thread that it might be a good idea to stock up on rum, beer, wine - you know, the essentials for a tolerable isolation period. As it happens, the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), announced yesterday that they were cutting back hours. I dunno, maybe they're miffed at not being mobbed by the hoarders and want to create their own panic? Anniversary this Friday and the wife and I traditionally go out for a nice wine and dine dinner at the best dining room in town. Except all restaurants are closed except for take-out. Since Pizza Hut, etc. won't quite cut it, I'll be barbecuing a couple fillets at home - at least it's warm enough now that I won't have to pour boiling water over the propane tank to get the barbecue going!

In PA, the state has the monopoly on selling hard liquor. The governor ordered those state run stores closed a few days ago.

@ Hellgate, my wife’s brother lives in the Baltimore area. He left his store a few days ago, and saw a long line of people. He strolled over to see what was being sold, lo and behold the line was for people waiting to get into a gun shop to buy ammo.

Thanks Dennis.

He was 96, and in increasingly poor health. I am amazed he lived this long. Unfortunately I didn’t visit last year, I feel a little bad about that.
