Possible external identifier for 1st gen upgrade holeHi Dan,
I am posting this here as a more open question and would like to see if we can find others with more than one 1st gen engine to post what they can find. I had a really good look at both my engines ('83 xv750se - no starter uprade hole and '85 700 - with starter upgrade hole) and the pictures on this forum as well as quite a number of pictures of engine cases available on ebay of both the 750 and 920 1st gens. I would like to propose this: The cases with the starter upgrade hole can be identified on the outside of the case by 2 numbers that are part of the casting of the left side case as per the arrows in this photo: So what I was hoping is we can gather more evidence for this hypothesis by asking people that have done the upgrade to check or better yet post a picture of the corresponding part of their engine as well as the same for engines that were a definite no starter hole.. Only then can we say for sure.. Cheers, Rant. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. Re: Possible external identifier for 1st gen upgrade holeI have an '82 920, and I think we determined that the 920's were pretty much
ready for the upgrade. But will check mine and post within the next few days. ![]() Manuals: http://viragotechforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=220&t=31501#p279545 Wiring Diagrams: http://www.viragotech.com/wiring/
Re: Possible external identifier for 1st gen upgrade holeI don't think the engine numbers will tell as they are on the right casing but those two little numbers on the front of the left one, the one that needs to have the hole might.
Here are my engine numbers just in case: '85 XV700 - 56E - 006535 (with hole) '83 XV750SE - *5G5-002863* (without hole) There are a couple of dozen or so cases (XV750 + XV920) on ebay right now with pictures good enough to see if they have the hole or not and see those front cooling ribs to check for numbers. All the ones I saw with the hole also had the numbers all the ones without, including one supposedly for a XV920 that had no numbers had no hole.. So if you have done the upgrade or could not do it because your case has no hole then post it below, try get a picture of the front of the case showing those ribs with the two little stamping numbers on the outer corner. Re: Possible external identifier for 1st gen upgrade holeMy daughter wasn't home, and I couldn't find her camera. Sorry, I don't own a digital camera.
But my '82 920J has the same 3 & 10 markings as posted in earlier pics. ![]() Manuals: http://viragotechforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=220&t=31501#p279545 Wiring Diagrams: http://www.viragotech.com/wiring/
Re: Possible external identifier for 1st gen upgrade holeChecked my motor the other day. 1983 xv750. I have the numbers 3 and 10. Looked for the hole and yes there is one. Guess I'll be doing the upgrade if and when I ever get the time to rebuild the bike
