Recommendations for XV engine work in the UK ?

PostAuthor: Odradek » Wed Jul 15, 2020 5:51 am

Hi,

I have a 1982 XV920R, which I bought when I lived in the USA and then had shipped back to Europe.
Long story, but the bike popped out of gear one day, over-revved and bent some valves.
Was quoted $750 to repair it at the time in Los Angeles but I just put it to one side of the garage and had another bike.
Shipped it to Europe intending to get it back on the road, but time flies. That was 20 years ago.

Now I'd love to get the bike back on the road. Has been stored with oil poured into the cylinders, and is in good shape.
But first off I'll need the valves replaced and maybe need some other minor engine work.

Can anyone recommend a place in England that might specialise in XV engines ?

Preferably southern England.

Thanks

Not really, but the work shouldn't be too hard to do. (I'd offer you my services in Austria, but this would be rather complicated and difficult for both sides)

If you don't insist on running your heads, this would actually be the moment, where you could think about upgrading to XV750 heads. What other things are you referring to, that need your attention?

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks.

What are the advantages of XV750 heads ?

Hadn't thought what else I could do while engine apart, except maybe replacing the starter for something better.

In the past I had toyed with the idea of switching cylinders to make it 1000 or 1100cc, but I don't think I'd bother now.

Haven't touched this bike in 20 years.

Smaller combustion chamber, which bumps up the compression a bit and the smaller valves, will help with shifting the powerband down a bit. If this suits your driving style, it's something you may enjoy a lot. Converting the starter setup should be easy as you're in the UK: get a TR1 sidecover and the internals and the long-shaft 4-brush starter for a bit more oomph.

For TR1-parts, you may want to ask at the German TR1.de Forum (they also speak English) and I am pretty sure someone will have what you need.
