replacement parts needed

PostAuthor: Pamtha7 » Mon Jun 18, 2018 12:08 pm

My not so bright son managed to lay my bike down when he was still living at home and didn't admit it. I'm still fuming about that and still fixing the parts he broke on the right side. I am looking for the right battery cover, I can't seem to find one anywhere. Ideas? The other thing I'd like to replace are the rubber 'covers' that are on both hand levers. Mine are starting to show their age and I have no idea where to look for them.

The covers are called grips and using that term should turn up more results for you. The bars are 7/8" but a lot of bars are 1" so make sure to check that. There are a lot of aftermarket ones available.

You might have a hard time finding that cover because everyone loses them so they're rare. Yamaha reproduced ones that are chrome and those are still available OEM last time I checked a few years ago.

Not for the 500.

The 2nd Gen 700 thru 1100 and 250, maybe the 535 were made by aftermarket vendors.

The side covers will occasionally turn up on ebay, but they are usually beaten up, the wrong colour and too expensive. Years ago I lost one and luckily I found one at a local used bike parts store, then shortly after, lost it again. Obviously in those years I had too much time on my hands because I decided to fabricate one out of fiberglass. It was a lot of work but you wouldnt know the difference. Now my side covers are lockwired so I don't loose them.

Whoops, my mistake. I tend to assume things are the big Viragos, and this time I didn't check before replying.

No kidding! I haven't seen the right cover for my 500 but even 535 covers are outrageous. The last one I saw was all scratched up and yet they wanted almost $60 for it in addition to exorbitant shipping. Mine got cracked in the fall and my dear husband 'put it somewhere safe' and has no clue where that is. Very frustrating since I'm a bit anal retentive about things like that. Missing cover, bothers me ever time I look at the bike.

one member got so tired of it all [for his Gen-I] that he built his own of aluminum tread plate - they looked pretty good.

There is a member in the Virago Nation Facebook group that makes some pretty nice leather side bags that fit in place of the side covers. Not a bad look at all I say.

Those are for the 2nd Gen 700 to 1100. The XV500 cover is vastly different, a lot more work would have to go into a cover for the 500.
