XV1000 Starter bits, gears

PostAuthor: Carter240 » Tue May 15, 2018 6:10 pm

So I just discovered the parts bike I bought to do a starter conversion is missing the starter bits that I need to make the co version work on my xv920.

What I need is everything except the engine cover, starter, starter clutch/ bendix gear and the solenoid/ starter itself.

So you just need the starter gear set? I've got a set from an '86 XV700 that had only 15,000 miles on it. $110 plus shipping from Michigan, USA.

Yeah, I’ll need the gear set and all the rest of the little pins and parts required. I literally have the starter, and engine cover. That’s it :(

I’ll take what you have for sure! Is it the same as the xv1000?

Is there something that goes on the end of the solenoid? It appears to be notched for some reason...

How would you like to do this transaction?

Hmmm, I think the bigger idler gear was changed in 1986 so this set might not work on your bike, sorry. I have a complete starter system from an '84 XV1000 I'll be selling soon but you don't need all that. There's a drive lever and spring that attaches to the end of the solenoid, see the following parts diagram: https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1984/virago-1000-xv1000l/starter-clutch

Thanks! That image helps alot. I ended up finding everything on ebay. Although it wasnt cheap buying all the parts separately. Im into this starter replacement for about $800 :o: . However i still ended up with a set of wheels ill be using, and the beefier xv1000 fork/front end with better brakes so its not a total loss on the parts bike. Just such a piss off to remove the engine cover and find all the pieces missing.
