Main bearing replacement

PostAuthor: postiebike » Mon Mar 11, 2019 4:58 pm

Hi all,

the main bearings on my XV1000 TR1 are shot. They are not readily available through bearing retailers, and places like Bike Bandit list them at over $100 each! I have 2 questions: 1) are the Virago 920 and XV1000 motors the same as far as main bearings go?
2) are these bearings available anywhere at lower prices?
I am in Australia and need to factor exorbitant freight/postage charges and an ordinary exchange rate into the deal.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy, XV1000 and XV1100, XVS1100 and BT1100 all use the same roller bearings. Yes, they are exceptionally expensive as Yamaha spec'ed non-DIN-standard bearings. If you have a lathe, you could turn a spacer ring and then run DIN-bearings (as on the 750), but then again, if the engine hasn't been open for a long time, the ball-bearings usually last (quite literally) forever.

I just removed a crankshaft from a '92 XV1100. Pretty sure the main bearing is the same as your bike. Let me know if you're interested in purchasing it, shipping shouldn't be too much even from the USA.

Thanks for the information and offers of help gentlemen. Before I go any further with purchases, I will remove the crank from a spare motor I have and see if it's OK. With winter approaching here, there might be some opportunities to spend more time in the shed and less time riding. I still might get the engine built before I die of old age!!
