No spark 1987 XV700 (SOLVED)

PostAuthor: Foxvos » Tue Feb 25, 2020 7:57 am

Hello everyone,

I am trying to finish my cafe racer project on a XV700 1987. One of the last things to do are the electronics. On which i am a total noob. I am trying to get the bike to start with the minimum amount of wiring before i go further with the lights etc. I wired the ignition side up following dan's (totallyredvirago) wiring diagram for a xv700 1985. Couldnt see much difference between the 1985 and 1987 diagram except for the starter relay (which i put in because I dont know how to wire it without it). I am for 99% sure all connections are good (soldered and measured)

I cant get any spark out of the spark plugs. (the bike ran before i took it down a year ago). New sparkplugs dont work.

I measured some electronic components with the help of the manual. This are the results.

PartMeasuredSpecified
Ignition coils----------
No1 Primary5.44.2
No1 Secondary12.2 K13.2 K
No2 Primary5.44.2
No2 Secondary13.2 K13.2 K
Pickup Coil----------
Brown Green wire151.2155
Red Blue wire151.2155
Stator coil1.10.5
(All 3 possible cominations read the same)

Do you guys know any solution or test to start the bike/exclude a component?

Thanks for any help! :thanks:

PS sorry for any spelling mistakes I'm Dutch not native english

Check the kill switch?

Measured the killswitch it is a closed line when on run position so that is wired correctly.

Hmmm, I made up a "bare bones" harness using TRV's threads on an'85 750 (Canadian) and it worked perfect for me. So all I can suggest is to go back through the diagrams and confirm everything is correct? And just a couple more thoughts... you have a ground for the TCi? and might you have blown the ignition fuse somewhere along the way? (I blew mine in a careless moment while making connections)

:yup: also check to make sure all the safety switches are bypassed. As I recall, TRV's bare-bones diagram eliminated them, but check to be sure.

if you turn the key on. you should have power in all the red/white wires. the red/white powers the TCI and both coils.
make sure that you have the TCI black wire going to a solid ground.
at the TCI make sure that the black/white wire is gone. (not used at all)
let me know what you have or have not...........dan
82 xv 750 skull on grips,levers,3rd brake and side covers.soft bags and tool bag, relay for coils, fresh inferno red, paint code PEL(red)

no time to do it right..always enough time to do it twice.
it is if is isnt :con:
If it went together easy... you forgot something.
when in doubt.... ground it out!

Thank you Dan!!!!

It was the black white cable from the tci. I had it going to ground...

Do you know the purpose of this cable and why it is even there?

The Blk/Wh wire on the TCI is for the safety switches. Ground it kills the TCI output.
