Charging system output

PostAuthor: Marko Sharko » Sun Oct 15, 2017 11:53 pm

Hi all, 81 xv 750, need to understand what volts I can expect to see before I drop in the lithium battery.
Standard battery used to start records 13.4 before I run the bike, when idling it doesn't really increase, when I rev it, it increases to about 13.6, thoughs?
Is this enough as I was expecting to see 14 to 14.3

Thanks

MK

Should be around 14 volts at 2000 RPM. You may have a failing stator or a failing R/R. Check the AC output of the stator. .Procedure is in the service manual and let us know what you find.

R/R, + lead to negative RR feed, touched all 3 connectors from stator.
4.90, 4.90 and 4.88
Negative lead to + RR feed, 4.90, 4.90 and 4.84.
Negative to negative reading 0, so is positive to positive.
Looks as if the RR is ok?

Stator, A to B, B to C, C to A, can,t get a reading, multimeter only goes to 1 though.
3 stator connections to ground, no reading.

Thoughts?

So this is the resistance of the R/R?
- not sure

You are saying that you don't get a reading, when you check the resistance between the yellow wires? so your multimeter has the same reading going to ground as it does to the the other yellow wires? Does not look good for your stator.

I guess the bike runs? Set the multimeter to AC, test the yellow lines coming out of the stator. this will tell you how much voltage the stator is putting out. This will be a second test of the stator.

You are in the process of replacing your battery with an Li-ion right? From what I have read it is a good idea to upgrade to a MOSFET R/R. there are a few good links in this thread.

Also why lithium?

Thanks I will test the stator, why Lithium? Space, the bike has been cafed, it's all the room I have under the seat. I have 150mm x 110 x 80, battery can sit of its side, I have spent 18 months a bit if $ getting it to look right so don,t wish to not finish it properly for the sake of not hiding the battery.
18" Wire wheels, Benelli tank which is chopped and been added to, billet triple yoke, custom seat unit, full custom 2 into 1, lowered front, progressive springs, I have built everything, wheels, seat, sub frame, exhaust,

Re: Charging system output (SOLVED)

Looks like the stator is shot, AC readings of 6.2 - 6.2 - 25.6 at idle. Far from consistent.
I will just replace it along with a new RR and be done with it.

Thanks for the help.

Definitively a bad stator.... Voltage should read in the 50+ vac range at RPM. My advise would be to replace the R/R as well. If it isn't bad it could go bad soon or it may be the cause of the stator going south for the winter......

Any recommendations on manufacturers? There is a huge price difference on eBay, Celtric, Ricks, Eurosport, there is over $100 difference, same with the Mosfet regulators.
Being in New Zealand it not easy to just swap it or take it back, all units we buy locally come from Canada and the US anyway and they cost a small fortune.

Thanks and appreciate the help.

Ricks is very good at honoring warrenty items. Amazon suppliers, not so much. Sometimes the lowest price isn't.

I feel your pain, not being able to get the right parts...

however, I know that New Zealand has no taxes on importing cars... all those cool Japanese cars, so cheap, so cool. :bg: unless they changed the laws...

Why don't you go to the Yamaha dealer and get an R/R for a Yamaha R1... according to the thread I linked to, it is a mosfet. That way you don't need to be worried about a fake one... and you shouldn't need to get it shipped from an other country. that thread also has a part number... Just be prepared for strange looks if you usually by parts for your xv there.

I would also like to see pictures. Build pictures are often more inspiring than just pictures of the finished project.

Stator replaced with a Ricks unit, RR replaced with a Mosfet unit from Roadercycle, battery shows 14.37 at 3000 revs, seems like that all works well, bit costly though to be fair.
Thanks for all advise.
Pics to come as soon as I have time, and the swimming pool build is complete.
