82 920 with a 81 750 wire harness

PostAuthor: Justheman80 » Sat Aug 12, 2017 9:44 am

I have a 82 920, the wire harness has been hacked up and I want to get rid of the cycom. Will a 81 750 wire harness be plug and play? Well outside of what gauges I want to run. Also I have the metal TCI. If not what would need to be done.

The '81 XV750 harness should work fine with XV750 gauges and controls. Otherwise I think you will have to do a little rewiring to use your XV920 controls. I believe the control connectors are different between models. Also the XV750 doesn't have running lights in the turn signals.

the 750 connector for the start button does NOT have the ground black wire for the push button to work. you will have to add this ground wire to the harness. the 750 uses the handle bar for ground. since the 920 is a 2 piece handle bar it cannot be used as a ground.. thus needing the ground wire added.
you will need all the relays and diode from the 750 harness. due to the 750 is the only one that has a headlight relay. the relay keeps the headlight off til the push button is pressed then released. the ground from the push button blue/white wire sends a ground to the diode. from the diode the wire turns white to the headlight relay.

all others have the headlight come on with the key and turn off while cranking the engine..............dan

Thanks for all input as I did order the wire harness from auction site.

Dan, I will be following Geo's guide for deleting all the relays from the starting system. Would I still need that diode and relay you mentioned?

Also the factory connector to my tci has been cut off and butt contacted back together, the one that wraps under the frame close to the carbs. Is there anywhere I can order that connector and pins, to attach to the metal Tci? Or any one have a bad tci laying around and would send me the pig tail?

geo's guide is for getting rid of the cycom not replacing the 920 harness with a 750 harness.
reread what i wrote. YES you need the 750 diode and relays.............dan

I was referring to Geos starter cut off and cut out relay write up, also deletes the side stand and clutch perch.

But I do now understand what you are saying. The headlight relay and diode needs to be used from the 750. The harness coming does not have the diode or relay, I will have to source those and a way to connect the tci.

Okay so it seems ( from what I am reading and searching) the cut off and cut out relay write is for the 82 920, and is not the same for the 750. Is that correct?
