I'm surprised. Usually places like NAPA, O'Reillys, PEP Boys, Wal-Mart, Auto-Zone, etc. have them on the shelf.
It's been a while tho. Think I paid ~ $4 for a box of 5[?]

the gold plated ones are for audio [I imagine] but would prolly work

Re: Runs clean, refill tank, sputtering, can't restart

PostAuthor: Barfso » Thu Apr 20, 2017 3:18 pm

I checked AutoZone, and they didn't have the right size fuses. I think Walmart may have had the right ones, but I when I looked, I wasn't sure if they would work, because the ribbon on the inside of the fuse was different. As I said before, the one that came out of the bike was "S" shaped, and the one at Walmart had a "zig-zag" shape. I didn't want to put the wrong thing in and screw something else up. I tend to do that.

I did order a fuse that should work. It should be in by Monday at the latest. Once I put it in, I will check back and post what happened.

From there, I need to check the fuel issue (assuming there are no other electrical issues).

Thanks for all the help thus far.

30 amp is 30 amp, doesn't matter

electricity is magic / mystical to me so I hear you.
I like to replace electrical things with identical ones so I feel sure they are the right ones, even-though in my head I know, as Jake said, an amp is an amp - sorta like water is water whether tap or Perrier, and the shapes add only visual interest.

***UPDATE***

I received the new amp in the mail, plugged it in, and everything turned on fine. It took a couple tries for the engine to finally turn over, but it is currently ALIVE.

I let it idle for a few minutes and gave it a little throttle every now and again just to see if I experienced any sputtering or backfiring that started this whole debacle. I got a little bit of backfiring, but I won't really know how everything is running until I am able to take it out for a ride. I still want to run something through the fuel lines to clean anything out that may be gunking up the system, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'd like to avoid having to tear the bike apart to clear out the fuel line and clean the tank by hand, etc. I am in the parking lot of my apartment complex with minimal tools.

I am currently turning this into a "ghetto bobber," so it will be a week or two until it is street legal. I will start a new thread with the progress I made and what I am doing to it.

try the "Seafoam Trick" - 1/2 can of Seafoam fuel additive to a tank of gas, then ride until you need a re-fill - repeat with other 1/2 can on return trip.
using a quality brand, fresh fuel of course.

Should I ride continuously? And I assume that it just the regular SF-16 you can buy pretty much anywhere?

Thanks!

best if you are able to make it all in one outing, and yeah that is pretty much an all day thing, but by the end of it you are really familiar with her and, hopefully,
then confident in her ability to run, and yours to notice performance details/diagnose them.

yep, the familiar red and white can.

I might suggest [at first] a loop around the neighborhood until you reach that point of confidence in it running ok. JIC

times like that, I notify my son to have a rescue 'trailer' on standby. again JIC and until I get some experience/confidence is the "new" ride.

Awesome. I may have to give it a try. I have a Jeep Cherokee that had all sorts of issues and I contemplated running seafoam through it, but read a lot that it can actually uncover things that may not be an issue until you run the seafoam. Does that sort of thing translate to a motorcycle?

Also, am I gonna be blowing huge clouds of smoke when I add it to my fuel?

I'll definitely have an emergency pick up on standby. I spent 7 hours baking on the side of the road waiting for a tow when this thing first broke down. :tf:

it might smoke a little bit, depends on the stuff burning-off, but it wont be like my uncles old '49 Merc when he put MMO down the carb. --- a 'fog machine'

hmmm. guess one could do that with Seafoam, too [straight into carb] - for carbon & stuff in combustion chamber. :con:

this is just my opinion --- used as directed, Seafoam will do no harm, and if it "uncovers" something, it was already there and I just didn't know it. to me 'forewarned' is 'forearmed'.
I don't like any surprises anytime.

Barfso said, "...but read a lot that it can actually uncover things that may not be an issue until you run the seafoam. Does that sort of thing translate to a motorcycle?"

I suppose it could, but I have not had it happen to me, it only stabilized the carb functioning. no odd revelations, but I never have put any in the oil.

Thanks for the tip. As far as I understand, the carbs on viragos can be pretty finicky. Gotta do what I can to make sure its life is extended as much as possible.

yeah, the carbs seem to be the biggest "ticklish" spot on an XV.
once correct though they run well a very long time with little more than [PMS] Preventative Maintenance Service. [oil, filters, battery, etc.]

Re: Runs clean, refill tank, sputtering, can't restart

PostAuthor: Barfso » Tue May 09, 2017 4:14 pm

Update thus far. After replacing the main fuse and getting a new battery, the bike was running fine. I haven't been able to take it out, as it does not have a tail light or rear blinkers. It sat for about a week, and then I went to start it up, but nothing happened. I had an old car battery that I used to jump it, but it wouldn't full turn over and you could hear the clicking as if it was getting power.

I assumed that I left something on and I drained the battery. So, I had it recharged at AutoZone. After reinstalling it, I turned the key, but nothing. No neutral light, no clicking. Main fuse is still good.

I am stumped and I am about 2 days away from pushing this thing into a ditch and leaving it for the birds. I've searched and searched, but I feel like this issue has too many possible answers on the internet. I haven't been able to find what the issue could be. Any help would be much appreciated.

could be the key-switch has a dirty contact/loose connection?
one loose connection along the way would do it.

agreed, electrical gremlins is the worst.

Could that be it, even though I had it clicking and attempting to turn over with the jump? and with a new battery, I get nothing?

rediscovered these from DansM/C ---> http://www.dansmc.com/electricaltesting.htm

---> http://www.dansmc.com/electric_starters.htm

clicking is relay or solenoid? so juice getting that far. could be the starter it self/brushes?

that's why electrical gremlins are so aggravating. :hair: :nuclear:

So... I am assuming it is a faulty battery issue. I took the battery out of the equation and hooked jumper cables directly to the battery wires and the bike fired right up. I am little skeptical that I've received 2 bad batteries. If that's the case, I assume there is a power draw somewhere? Someone also told me it could be a bad ground? Anyone know where I'd start looking?

the battery negative cable [OEM] ends where the engine case [rear lower] and the frame join - start there. make sure all connections are clean [shiny metal] & tight.
some swear-by dielectric grease and some swear-at it :con:
also may be one out of harness under the tank, don't forget the reg/rec, TCI, switches, & lights.
almost every (+), uses the frame for (-) ground.

and it is not inconceivable that you could get two defective 'new' batteries in a row. you wouldn't be the 1st.
