xv750 Ignition Coils on XV1000 Engine

PostAuthor: SteveO531 » Fri Jun 19, 2020 5:48 pm

Do the coils interchange between the Gen 1 bikes and the Gen 2 Engines? I have a 1985 XV1000 motor mounted into a 1982 frame, and I'm wondering if I can use the ignition coils from the 1982 xv750 instead of trying to fab up a mount for the xv1000 coils. I would use the igniter from xv1000, and I would have to wire in different connectors to attach to the coils. Would this work?

the 'igniter' (aka TCI) are pretty much engine specific for timing curve etc. but as I've never actually switched any, if you have them already you could give it a try.
they're too expensive to just 'but-n-try' experiment.

the coils have similar ohm impedance (4.2-Pri & 13.2-Sec) so should swap ok.
I would check the cables & caps while at-it.

EDIT: OOPS my bad. those #s are Gen-II coils

I should have dug out the manual before posting. According to the manual for the 1981-1983 coils, the primary winding resistance is 2.7 ohms, and the secondary winding resistance is 8.5K ohms.

The 1984-on coils have primary resistance of 4.2 ohms, and secondary winding resistance of 13.2K ohms.

I don't think they are interchangeable. Anyway, I found a pretty easy way to mount them into the front engine bracket, so I'm back to using the XV1000 coils.

Thanks for the reply!
