1985 xv1000 Broken Tab on Inside of Case

PostAuthor: SteveO531 » Thu Mar 19, 2020 6:15 pm

I bought a 1985 virago xv1000, with the intention of turning it into a bobber. I'm putting the xv1000 motor into an '82 XV 750 frame. The starter system is way improved in the '85 vs the '82, which is one of the reasons I want to use the 1000 motor (plus I like the monoshock look).

The xv1000 motor was seized when I bought it. I was able to free the motor, and after I pulled the left side engine cover off I found a couple pieces of metal sitting in the bottom of the case. The broken pieces are from a 1" x 1/2" tab that sticks out of the case between the flywheel and the rear cylinder sprocket for the cam chain. I was thinking of trying to find a local welder to weld the pieces back into the case, but then I was wondering if I really need to. Does that tab provide a critical use in the motor?

Here's a picture of the broken tab in the case.

I don't think that tab is real important. I checked the spare one I have that's good and would think what you have would not cause a problem.

Ok - thanks! I wasn't sure if the tab was there to block oil from being thrown from the crank, or vice versa. Maybe I got lucky. :bg:

Most likely, everything is fine. If you want a second opinion, you could PM member "nanno", who has done a ton of these engines.
