Help!! Won’t stay running

PostAuthor: JamesVirago1985!?! » Sat Feb 02, 2019 5:00 pm

I have a 1985 XV1000. It has a hard time starting and won’t stay running after 3 seconds. The only way to get it to start is ether directly in the carb and to feather the throttle. I hear a rapid clicking where the seat should be.

Your bike has an electric fuel pump located on the right side under the seat behind the battery cover and near the pivot point of the swing arm. That could be what you hear clicking....even when you first turn the key on the pump should click for about 5 seconds while it fills up the float bowls on the carbs. Sounds like it can't do that in your situation. Obviously make sure you have enough fuel in the tank, pull the fuel inlet line to the pump to make sure it's getting fuel to start with. If it's getting fuel, why isn't the fuel getting to the carbs? Could be a problem with the floats sticking or the jets being plugged up and not letting fuel in. If the pump isn't getting fuel, check the filter between the sub-tank and the pump.

Good advice! Also you should open the drain plug in the bottom of the carb bowls to make sure you have fuel in the carbs.. Will it run with choke on?
