any ideas on how to build a center stand?

PostAuthor: eslmatt » Thu Oct 05, 2017 4:31 am

I have a xv750 gen 2, I tried to build my own with some light angle iron. It was too light and bent.

I am going to pull my engine, and front end off, and I don't have a center stand or a motorcycle jack. I also don't mind taking it off when I am done.

Any ideas of what to build?

thanks.

Seems like one of those things where the $30 to get one off ebay is a good deal compared to the risk of having a DIY fail in the middle of engine removal/installation. That said, when I am doing engine R&R, I add secondary support for the bike from above, using a harbor freight boat trailer winch mounted on the wall (into the triple-wide studs at a door frame) and a heavy duty pulley bolted thru a joist overhead. Maybe something like that might help you.

Those cheap jacks seem to be made for bikes with at flat frame underneath. Once I remove the engine I will only have the center stand mount...

I can't provide any details on how to or where to place it exactly, since I'm too lazy to lie down to look under my bike, why not use a scissor jack ?

Scissor jack on a two by four maybe three feet long perpendicular to the bike with eye bolts on both ends for tie down straps to keep it stable.

since you're planning to remove the engine, to my thinking, you will need some sort of crane, or hoist, or gantry to hold the frame. ---> https://www.harborfreight.com/automotiv ... ranes.html

something along those lines.... :con:

here is what I built

It is made out of 5cm angle iron, 4mm thick. The total length is 30cm. the width at the top is 25cm, at the bottom it is 35cm. the space the uprights that bolt to the bike are 15cm apart. I leaned it back and put the legs on it so I could avoid needing to build the brace support, I don't need the center stand most of the time so I will just take it off when I am done.

It raises the rear end a little high, but still functional for what I need. I used a scrap box with some foam pad to lower the engine onto. Then used a brick to raise the front up and slide it out... it would have been easier to use something with wheels to support the engine.
