Welding directly on XV920 81' frame

PostAuthor: BenL » Sun Aug 27, 2017 3:20 pm

Hello guys, :bg:

To build my subframe, I need to weld some fixations directly on the XV920 frame.
It will look like the attached image.

I'm worrying because when I removed my air filter box, it smells quite much like gasoline vapors in the frame. :o:

I'm a beginner, but I suppose it's risky to weld directly on the frame if inside there are some vapors ? :ops:

I know that for gas tanks we can put water or sand to eliminate vapors... but in my case it will suppose removing the engine and take apart the bike completely... :ssorry:

How would you proceed to weld these fixations on the frame ??

Thanks in advance for your advices
:)
Ben

use compressed air or a hair dryer -> into the frame for a few minutes

be mindful that oil residue might ignite from welding heat, so have some baking soda [or soda pop] on hand as a fire-extinguisher. ['bout all Pepsi is good for anyway] :;: JMO

both are water soluble, so could be flushed out later before painting.

looks like she is already all-apart, but JIC; I would remove the TCI before striking that 1st arc. --- some might argue that TCI parts are tougher than recent ECM.
why chance it?
