1982 XV920RJ: suggestions

PostAuthor: Naspc » Tue Mar 09, 2021 7:35 pm

Hello Fellow 'Forumners',

Need some advice. I managed to grab a 82 XV920RJ late last year. It has seen better days. I finally got it running with my pile of Virago parts, still need some adjusting. But it will idle.
So some idiot painted the cylinders and heads red. Should I try and strip it off somehow? Or should I replace the cylinders and heads? If I go the replacement route should I go with a 750 head and cylinder for let compression?

I did hit it with paint stripper before replacing the parts. Do you plan to rebuild it?

Paint Stripper should work unless somebody did a really good job painting them. I'd always recommend going with 700/750 heads unless you're part of the super-high-rpm crowd as it bumps down the powerband and makes the bike feel stronger (than it actually is), due to the increased torque.

Not sure what I want to do with it. Leaning on building it to my liking. I feel its to far gone and missing parts to restore. I guess i will try some paint striper and see if it will work, Thanks.

Nah its a crap paint job, chipping when I swapped out carbs. I will see if the paint striper before i go done the rebuild road. So its just the heads and not both heads and cylinders?

Nope, just the heads as the smaller combustion chamber increases the compression.

Easy to see why you'd want to get rid of that red paint - sorta looks like it belongs on a tractor...looks like that stripper will do the job for you.
My Ride, '97 XV1100, +14, 10" over forks, progressive rear, Jardine forward controls, cobra slip-ons, K&N Filter, Dyno Jet Stage 1, Kuryakin grips, heat demon heaters, custom fabricated seat, chrome side covers, bullet signals, risers, custom modified rear fender with modified FZ1 tail light, sectioned and reversed front fender, custom paint...

First thing I thought of...looks kinda like my kid brothers fire truck peddle car. You know the type, when the factory "dips" the whole thing in paint "after" everything is slapped together.
